Forbidden Passages
Writings Banned in Canada
Edited by Cleis Press Introduction by Pat Califia and Janine Fuller
The books and magazines excerpted in Forbidden Passages were seized at the Canadian border as sexually "degrading," "obscene" and politically suspect. Proceeds go to Little Sisters Bookstore, Vancouver, to support their legal action against the Canadian government's discriminatory enforcement of customs regulations.
"If you buy only one gay or feminist book this year, it should be Forbidden Passages…You may not agree with many of the things I've said, or some of the positions I take in my work. Perhaps you won't like some of the pieces that appear in Forbidden Passages. But don't you think you ought to have the right to read them in the first place? …Buy this book, hold a benefit, make a donation. Gag the state, before it chokes you!" —Pat Califia, author of Public Sex: The Culture of Radical Sex
"Forbidden Passages is an eloquent indictment of all forms of censorship, including censorship allegedly designed to promote women’s rights and safety....What a tragedy that, in the name of feminism, Canadians have been denied access to these eye-opening words from gifted writers, including many women and feminists!" —Nadine Strossen, President of the American Civil Liberties Union and author of Defending Pornography; President, American Civil Liberties Union
